KMI Policies
Equipment:
Proper equipment is important to the learning process. The student is required to provide his/her own guitar, guitar picks, electronic tuner, guitar strings, and/or instructional book(s); as assigned by the teacher. Other equipment may be required based on individual needs. This equipment may include, but is not limited to; a capo, publications assigned by the instructor, and any other items determined necessary by the instructor.
Tuition/Lesson Format:
Tuition for guitar lessons from KMI is not based on a per lesson fee. Tuition is charged as a flat monthly fee, which allows the student to have access to the teacher and the materials that are made available, both in physical form and in electronic form online. Face-to-face sessions are scheduled as part of the curriculum that is taught by KMI instructors, but these sessions are not the only benefit provided, and therefore are not the sole basis for calculation of tuition. Tuition fees are paid in advance on or before the first day of each month. Payment must be made on time. Late payments will be assessed a $10 fee. Monthly fees will not be pro-rated.
Music lessons are not “one size fits all.” Because of this, not all lessons will take the format of the “traditional” face-to-face music lesson model. It is often more effective to provide information to the student, in a written document or an audio or video recording, to study before the instructor meets with the student face-to-face for further instruction. Because of this, there will be times when the regularly scheduled lesson will take the format of materials delivered to the student’s home (most often through the studio website or by email), instead of the student coming to the studio.
When face-to-face sessions are scheduled, the student is required to come to lessons prepared with their instrument, any equipment required by the instructor, and any assigned sheet music. Instructions given by the instructor during the lesson are to be followed by the student to the best of the student’s abilities.
Missed or Cancelled Sessions:
Please note that time and space have been allocated in advance for face-to-face sessions. If the student cannot be present at the session, the time and space allocations do not necessarily change, and so the expense to KMI does not change. I understand that events in life often interrupt pre-determined schedules and I will be as accommodating as possible. Alternate lesson formats will usually be provided. It is strongly preferred that advance notice be given if the student will not be attending a face-to-face session, whenever possible. This may be accomplished by telephone, email, or by logging into the studio website; and assistance is available if necessary.
Practice:
Practice instructions will be given to the student in some format. The most common format used for this is the lesson notes that are stored on the studio website and sent by email to the student after the lesson has ended. Practice times are to be recorded and entered into the website at least weekly. Use of the practice log that is provided for each student is strongly encouraged.
Termination of Relationship:
Termination of the relationship must be done with a one-month notice when possible. When tuition is paid, KMI makes certain time and space allocations. The expense for this is not immediately recoupable in all instances; and therefore tuition is not refunded for early termination of the relationship.
